This project is a partnership of the Ecological Society of America, the Botanical Society of America and the Society for the Study of Evolution, collectively, the Life Discovery Partners. Launched in March 2013, this project was made possible by a major grant from the National Science Foundation. This site is designed to allow members to share resources online images, syllabi, labs, lectures, data sets, software, etc. If you have a resource that helps the Society promote its mission, we're here to assist you in sharing it.

View Resource Investigating the Ecology of West Nile Virus in the United States

Use maps, online databases, and peer-reviewed literature to: (1) learn background information on WNV (history of emergence in the US; life cycle, hosts, and vectors; different forms of WNV disease and susceptibility of various human age groups) and (2) generate and test hypotheses correlating human, avian, and mosquito WNV infection with avian biodiversity, presence/abundance of different...

View Resource The nose knows: How tri-trophic interactions and natural history shape bird foraging behavior

This dataset is designed for first-year biology students, but can be altered for upper-level students. After receiving sufficient background on the biology of King penguins, students must make hypotheses regarding the penguins sensitivity to an odor known to be associated with the primary productivity of the ocean. Students are given multiple data sets and need to analyze the data using a...

View Resource Finding a species-area relationship for island birds using Solver in Excel

Grasping the mathematics underlying the species-area relationship in island biogeography can be difficult for students if they experience it passively. This exercise allows students to take an authentic data set of bird species richness from different islands in the Solomon Islands Archipelago and fit a species-area relationship (S=cAz). Students explore a biological concept in a hands-on...
